Cicada in Resin, Cicadoidea
That loud insect chirping you hear on those long summer days, those are Cicada (Cicadoidea). They have been classified as the worlds loudest insect. If you have ever heard a Cicada, you will notice that they often sing in chorus, this is believed to be a defense technique. The sound makes it hard for predators to locate just one individual. Only males sing, they do this to in an attempt to attract a mate.
They spend most of their lives underground as nymphs. Depending on the species, they can live this way for 6 – 17 years. Once they emerge as adults their life span is very short in comparison, usually only living a few weeks.
As with all insects in resin, size color and positioning can vary slightly. Clear resin block measures approx. 2 3/4 inches tall by 1 1/2 inches wide.
